frequently asked questions

what happens on cold and cloudy days?

Our collectors are the 'evacuated tube’ type which are far more efficient than cheaper flat panel collectors in colder northern climates. On average, around 90% of the sun’s heat which falls on the collector tubes is captured. Because our systems work with both direct sunlight and indirect solar radiation, they also heat your water on overcast days.

can I generate electricity?

A solar hot water system will generate hot water only. To generate electricity you will need photovoltaic (PV) panels, which remain relatively expensive, though government grants are available. Without a grant systems cost from about £7,000 for a fully installed grid connected domestic system.

are there any grants available?

Grant details are available from The Energy Saving Trust and the Low Carbon Building Programme. Please see their websites to check eligibility and availability.

any other benefits?

According to the Low Impact Living Initiative a solar hot water system is the most cost-effective renewable energy technology that you can install in the UK.

Investment in solar panels can increase the value of your property. It has been documented that solar panels can add nearly 9% onto your property value. (Sourced from The Guardian Online Newspaper)

is my house suitable?

Preferably you will need 3-4m2 of southeast to southwest facing roof. If roof orientation is not optimal, larger collectors can be fitted to compensate, but north-facing roofs should be avoided. All roof angles up to 60° can be accommodated, though between 30° and 45° is optimum. On flat roofs we provide a special ‘A’ frame fixing kit to achieve the optimal angle of the collector panels. You will also need space to locate a larger water cylinder if required.

will I need planning permission?

Planning permission should not be required in England, as long as panels would protrude from the roof surface by more than 200mm when installed. Exceptions apply for Listed Buildings, and those in Conservation Areas and World Heritage Sites. However, we suggest you liaise with your Local Authority Planning Department before purchasing.

is there any maintenance required?

All our installations come with a 3-year warranty as standard. Very little maintenance is required - an annual inspection by the householder plus an additional 3-year engineer’s inspection should suffice. We provide a comprehensive support service and can offer on-site maintenance for an extra fee if required.

why solar heating?

Each year the UK benefits from solar radiation greater than the output of 1,000 average power stations. Solar hot water systems offer one of the simplest and most widely used renewable energy systems in the world, which can capture some of this free solar energy and transfer it into your domestic hot water cylinder.

what areas do you work in?

We currently install throughout Yorkshire and the Humber, and the East Midlands.

how much will it cost?

£5,650 - One-year interest free payment terms are available

Installation price will be confirmed after our accredited installers have carried out a free, no obligation survey on your property.
